Renegades of Funk: Homemade Deodorant

I am a sweater and you better believe. I'll sweat because of anything: putting on lotion, sitting in a chair, carrying groceries, watching a tense movie, taking too hot of a shower. It really doesn't matter what season or what climate I'm in, I'm probably going to be sweating, which has led me to try about every goddamn deodorant under the sun. In the past, I was desperate to find the strongest, beefiest, sweat-annihilating deodorant known to man. It could have made me grow hair on the soles of my feet, but as long as it kept me from having any sort of moisture under my arms, I was prepared to try it. After a while of using store-bought and prescription strength antiperspirants, I noticed something. When I wore these ridiculous antiperspirants, I was sweating profusely everywhere else, and to tell you the truth, the stuff I was using wasn't doing that great of a job. I took a leap of faith, a shunned antiperspirant deodorant all together and took to using crystal deodorant, which was good for keeping me from being smelly. I like crystal deodorant, and if you want a deodorant totally free of antiperspirants, then I highly recommend it. But I needed a little more assurance, and that's when I discovered the magic formula. I found out that if you mix coconut oil, baking soda, arrowroot powder, and a few essential oils, that you got a pretty damn good deodorant out of that. Now, I am sharing the secret with you!

Ingredients:
1/4 cup Baking Soda
1/4 cup Arrowroot Powder
5 Tbsp Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
Your Favorite Scented Essential Oils (I used lemon, bergamot ,and ginger oils)

Step 1.) Melt your coconut oil in a double broiler, or as I use, a pot with an inch of water in the bottom with a glass bowl fitted over-top. Turn on medium heat and let the oil melt down. The coconut oil melts at 76 degrees Fahrenheit so it won't take long, in fact, you could melt it halfway and let the residual heat do the rest.
2.) Once your oil is melted, add your baking soda and arrowroot powder

3.) Stir the mixture until it's smooth with no lumps or bumps and remove the bowl from the heat. *IMPORTANT* You need to allow the mixture to cool before adding your oils. Putting essential oils in something that it too hot will destroy all the good stuff in the essential oils! So don't be impatient, or if you are impatient, put it in the fridge for about 10 minutes.

4.) Once your oils have cooled either on a counter or in the fridge,it's time to add your favorite fragrances. I added 7 drops of lemon oil, 4 drops of bergamot oil, and 3 drops of ginger oil.It ended up smelling like a lemon ginger cookie and it's freaking amazing! Use your favorite scent combo, or just use one!

5.) Transfer your mixture to a clean container, allow mixture to further cool and solidify, and you're finished! Your very own, homemade deodorant that cost you almost nothing that should last you as long, if not longer, than your traditional stick. To apply, just scoop about a half a teaspoons worth of the mixture and rub into your underarms until the oil gently melts into the skin.

I hope you try this cool and stupid-easy recipe that will free you from the shackles of commercial deodorant. Get a little more natural and play around with your favorite scents! One of my favorite places to get essentials oils is From Nature With Love, they've got a ton and also carry arrowroot powder and cute jars for packaging! Have a good weekend everyone!

Tropicooler Than Anything: Comptoir Sud Pacifique

Tropicool: Comptoir Sud Pacifique

Every once in a while, a true miracle happens that reminds you what it's like to be alive again. That little miracle happened this week when I checked the "What's New" section of Sephora's website. I was scrolling through, not expecting anything out of the ordinary when I saw a familiar name. Like the name of an old friend I thought had disappeared forever; one I never thought I'd see again. But there it was, Comptoir Sud Pacifique, a name I thought was forever damned to them realms of fragrance nostalgia websites! Comptoir Sud Pacifique is a fragrance line based around the scents of French Polynesia and it has E. By The Sea smeared all over it. Their fragrances range from sweet tropical fruits, to warm coconut, to fresh aquatic notes that are like a olfactory vacation. Not only did I find they re-released my favorite fragrances of the past, but they are selling smaller, roll-on versions FOR $20!! I nearly had a coronary and then promptly bought one. I remember begging for these as birthday gifts in high school and smelling them whilst watching half-loaded Roxy surf videos in the early days of high speed internet. This is the perfect time for this release because these are the only summer scents you will ever need. If you are not really into super fruity fragrances, wait around a bit, because Comptoir Sud Pacifique did have some floral fragrances in the past and I'm hoping they will make a comeback too. If your Coco Mademoiselle or your Miss Dior Cherie need to pack a lunch, get yourself a Tahitian vacation for as low as $20 with Comptoir Sud Pacifique's amazing frangrances! Bon Voyage!

Summer Florals: Gardenia Madness!

Floral Fabulousness

Floral Fabulousness by elbonner featuring a perfume fragrance

It's one of my favorite times of the year: gardenia season! I love walking the neighborhood and getting down wind of a gigantic gardenia bush, it's like being whisked away to a tropical paradise! I'm getting excited about the new smells and blooms I'll be seeing when I go to Hawaii, but since I'm not there yet I'm turning to some great products to get me through the next few weeks! I usually prefer citrus and fruity scents, but there's something about gardenias and plumeria that just get me in the mood to walk barefoot down the beach whilst getting my white jersey maxi dress wet (I don't do that shit).

Pacifica Tahitian Gardenia Solid Perfume: Great to throw in your purse without fear of breaking a glass bottle or as a mid-day pick-me-up that you can huff in a bathroom stall when you realize that you've already used up all your vacation days. The scent lasts a long time and smells like a warm Tahitian breeze!

Diptyque "Gardenia" Candle: Diptyque candles are always classy, smell amazing, and make you feel like you're living in a fabulous Parisian art loft, complete with flower garden. Great at bath time to calm you down, and great right before bed so that you fall asleep feeling like your surrounded by gardenia bushes!

Kai Roll-On Perfume Oil: Beautifully light and reminiscent of a romantic beach walk with a hot local name Paulo or something, Kai products are simple yet luxurious and just all-around great. The fragrance doesn't just come in a roll-on, it's a soap, it's a candle, it's a shower gel. Your whole house and being can smell like the vacation you've always dreamed of!

Malie Plumeria Body Cream: Okay, okay! I know it's not gardenia, but plumeria (or frangipani) is a very similar fragrance that I love just as much are gardenia. This body lotion is all organic and is a great moisturizer that is light enough to be worn on hot days which is a big factor in what kind of lotion I buy. When I use it I don't even think about the fact that my hometown climate couldn't support a plumeria bush! (so much sadness)

Get your fragrance on, people! Don't load it on like you're masking your scent from zombie hoards, just a light spritz with a sashay walk-through is good enough. Light florals like gardenia and plumeria are great for summer since they do well on their own and don't need other notes that can weigh them down. Gardenia up!!

Valentine's Day Wants

Valentine's Day Wants

Valentine's Day is just around the corner and it just happens to be my eight year anniversary with my boyfriend! No, we are not married or engaged yet, no he doesn't secretly hate me but is too nice to say so (I hope not), we just don't feel like  we need to be married to be happy together. Plus, weddings are stressful and expensive; I know I would be crap at planning one. It would be in someone's backyard with a bucket full of Bud Light and some veggie trays.

Ususally we don't exchange gifts on Valentine's Day, but I made a list of things that I wouldn't mind getting as a surprise! It's really just more of a list of stuff I want at the moment, so no real pressure for the BF!
